About Us
Yessera envisions a skilled, empowered, creative youth that can help transform Ethiopia. Our approach is a holistic one, based on demonstration to drive learning and innovation. Graduates of the Yessera program return to their communities with valuable skills and resources to start their own businesses and enrich their own lives and the lives of their fellow brothers and sisters.
Our History
In 2001, a few long time friends returned to Ethiopia for a visit after a long absence from home. Upon their return to the United States of America, the friends decided to establish Yessera. Their main idea was to see if a small budget with a visionary plan could go a long way in transforming Ethiopia, the country so dear to them. Grassroots efforts by a few dedicated Ethiopian professionals, working hard on a voluntary basis, proved the Yessera project was not only doable, but exemplary. Upon the completion of the second Hawassa program, we knew Yessera would be a success. We have transformed destitute individuals into empowered workers. There are now over 40 workers from the Yessera program in the Yessera Construction Association.
Thanks to increasing support, Yessera has set out to duplicate its work in multiple localities, in all four corners of Ethiopia. From the northern corner of Debre Birhan to Bekoji and to the west, students have accomplished great things in the Yessera program. As we work toward our vision of building the Yessera Training Center, our students take part in vocational schooling and work programs at the Opportunities Industrial Ethiopian Center (OICE). Our story shows that the vision of a few friends can become a reality. The roots of Ethiopia’s development and bright future have been planted.
Our Aspirations
A great society is made through innovation, creativity, harmony and the diligent efforts of its citizens. Yessera aspires to open doors of opportunity and empower individuals to build a great society. We nurture a culture of abundant creativity and work to break down barriers and transform traditional limitations into passageways to a brighter future for Ethiopia’s youth.
Program Overview
How does it work?
Participants go through one year of intensive skills training at the Opportunities Industrial Center Ethiopia (OICE), studying subject areas that have business enterprising potential. After graduation, when back in their communities, Yessera students are helped to venture into operating their businesses. During this time, Yessera is nearby to monitor success, expansion and visibility, and to mentor future Yessera graduates and the needy in those communities. While expanding this to all four corners of Ethiopia, Yessera continues with plans to build a multi-dimensional Yessera Training Center.
Who Qualifies?
High School graduates, unemployed or under-employed individuals are eligible to participate in Yessera’s program. A screening process determines the capability of candidates to undergo a short, but intensive internship.
Seriousness and long-term commitment to creative self-improvement is continuously highlighted. A significant effort is made to document the experiences and challenges of the trainees. A profile of all graduates is publicly available.
What Types of Businesses Are Involved?
Our focus has been on construction. However, as the capability to add more students increases, other viable areas will be included. Our goal is to have apprenticeships available in all major areas of the economy. Businesses that actively seek partnership and collaboration in training youth are especially welcome.
